When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
We recommend your child's first dental visit around their third birthday, unless you have concerns that warrant coming in earlier. The goal of that first visit is simple — to meet us, feel comfortable, and start building a positive relationship with dental care.
You're welcome to hold your child on your lap during the appointment. There's no pressure, and we go at your child's pace.

We offer fluoride treatments and fissure sealants to protect your child's teeth from decay — especially in the hard-to-reach grooves of back teeth.
Tooth extractions
Sometimes a tooth needs to come out — for example, if a baby tooth isn't falling out on its own and is blocking a permanent tooth, if there's overcrowding, or if a tooth is too decayed to save. We'll always explain why it's needed and keep your child as comfortable as possible.
Tooth fillings
If your child has a cavity, we'll fill it to preserve the tooth's function and prevent further damage.

What to Expect at Your Child's Appointment
Here's what happens when you arrive at DentalCare Carnegie:
1. Arrival
Check for the signs at each entry point to see where your child’s dentist is treating. Our reception team will greet you and your child warmly, confirm your details, and get you settled in.
2. Waiting area
While you wait, your child can watch Netflix or YouTube on our waiting room screens — just ask the team to switch to something they'd enjoy. Parents can enjoy a Nespresso coffee or relax back with an herbal tea.
3. The appointment
Your dentist and their assistant will call your child's name and take you through to a treatment room. They'll go through your child's medical and dental history, then gently examine your child's teeth. They may take X-rays or photos with a small intraoral camera (it looks like a pen). They'll talk you through any findings and answer any questions you have. The focus throughout is keeping your child calm, comfortable, and feeling safe.
Parking: There's 1-hour parking on Koornang Rd, 2-hour parking on Rosstown Rd, and 4-hour parking at the Woolworths car park at 11–29 Kokaribb St, Carnegie.

Your child's appointment is a special time! It’s our opportunity to help you as parents guide your child on a path of good and sustained oral health.
We have two points of entry to our clinic. Our clinic is located at Suite 1, 61 Koornang Rd Carnegie. Entry 1 is located on Rosstown Rd. Entry 2 is located on Koornang Rd. You and your child/children will be entering via Entry point 2, on Koornang Rd where our friendly team will be waiting for you.
There is parking available on Koornang Rd (1 hour parking), Rosstown Rd (2 hour parking) or around the corner at the Woolworths car park located at 11-29 Kokaribb St, Carnegie (4 hour parking). The Koornang Rd Strip is renowned for its eateries, Asian fusion cuisine, shopping and has a lovely, child friendly library and small outdoors play area. You and your child will enjoy your visit to the street!
Upon your arrival into the clinic, you will be met by one of our friendly reception team. We will welcome you and your child with a warm smile and, introduce ourselves to your child. We will confirm we have all of your details (new patient form if you are a new patient) and any other details we need such as insurance / Medicare details.
While you and your child are waiting for your appointment, you can select from any Netflix or YouTube shows in the waiting area. Please feel free to ask the reception team to change the show if you think it will help your child relax.
We also have a range of Nespresso coffee and T2 Herbal Teas for parents to enjoy.
When it comes time for your child's appointment, your child's Clinician or their dental assistant will come into reception and call out your child's name. You and your child will be welcomed into one of our treatment rooms.
The clinician will discuss your child's medical and dental history with you in detail and, will then ask your child is she can have a look in his/her mouth. The clinician may dictate some notes to her dental assistant while performing a visual check inside your child's mouth and ask to take some diagnostic images such as x-rays or photos with our digital intraoral camera (This kind of looks like a pen). From here, the clinician will discuss her findings with you. If any arrangements need to be made for further treatment, it will be organised for you before the end of your visit. All of our clinicians are very approachable and welcome you to ask any questions or relay any concerns about your child's oral health and oral development.

This covers check-ups, cleans, X-rays, fillings, fissure sealants, and extractions. We'll help you check your child's eligibility and bulk bill where covered.
This is very common, and our team is experienced in making children feel at ease. We go at your child's pace, explain everything in a friendly, age-appropriate way, and never rush. Yes — dental X-rays use very low doses of radiation and are considered safe for children. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary, and we use modern digital X-ray technology, which further minimises radiation exposure. X-rays allow us to detect problems that aren't visible to the naked eye, including decay between teeth and issues with developing permanent teeth.
