Getting Your Dentures — What to Expect

Your dentist assesses your gums, any remaining teeth, and your overall oral health, and discusses which type of denture is right for you.

Moulds are taken of your mouth, and careful measurements are made to ensure your new teeth sit at the right height and position for a natural bite.

A try-in denture (usually in wax) is placed in your mouth so you and your dentist can assess the look, fit, and bite before the final version is made. Adjustments are made at this stage.

Your finished dentures are fitted and any fine-tuning is done to ensure they're comfortable and secure. Your dentist will talk you through how to care for them and what to expect in the adjustment period.

Getting Used to Your New Dentures

It's completely normal for new dentures to feel unusual at first. Your mouth needs time to adjust — speaking and eating may feel different for the first few weeks, and some minor soreness as the gums adapt is common.

A few things that help during the adjustment period:

• Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, and gradually reintroduce a wider variety as you get comfortable
• Practise speaking out loud — reading aloud at home helps speed up the adjustment
• Use a small amount of denture adhesive if needed for extra confidence while you're getting used to them
• Come back for a review if soreness persists — adjustments are normal and expected, especially with new dentures

Caring for Your Dentures

With the right care, dentures can last many years. Here's how to look after them:

• Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to clear food debris

• Brush daily with a soft denture brush and mild denture cleanser — not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive

• Keep them moist when not wearing them — store in water or a denture-soaking solution overnight to prevent them from drying out and warping

• Clean your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth each morning before putting your dentures in

• Handle with care — dentures can crack or break if dropped, so clean them over a folded towel or a sink of water

• See us regularly — your gums and jawbone change shape over time, so periodic check-ups allow us to monitor the fit and reline or adjust your dentures as needed

When Dentures Need Relining or Replacing

Over time, the shape of your gums and underlying bone changes — particularly in the years following tooth loss. This can cause dentures that once fitted well to become loose or uncomfortable. Relining (adding new material to the fitting surface) can restore the fit without needing a completely new set. Most dentures last 5 to 8 years before replacement is recommended.

Implant-Retained Dentures

For patients who want greater stability and confidence, dentures can be anchored to dental implants. Implant-retained dentures snap onto implants placed in the jawbone, eliminating movement and making eating and speaking feel much more secure.
