What Happens at a Check-Up?

A standard check-up at our Carnegie clinic covers:

1. Examination
Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of decay, gum disease, or other concerns.

2. Professional clean
We remove plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing can't reach.

3. X-rays (if needed)
To check what's happening in between and beneath the tooth surface.

4. Personalised advice
Your dentist will talk you through any findings and recommend next steps if needed.

Most check-ups take around 30–45 minutes. If everything looks healthy, we organise to see you again for your regular 6 monthly maintenance. Remember, prevention is the best way to ensure a healthy mouth for the duration of your life.

How Often Should I See a Dentist?

For most people, a check-up every 6 months is recommended. Some patients with gum disease or a higher risk of decay may benefit from more frequent visits. Your dentist will let you know what's right for you.

Tips for Healthy Teeth Between Visits

Good oral health starts at home. Here's what makes the biggest difference:

Brush twice a day

Brush twice a day

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush all five surfaces of each tooth — front, back, top, and both sides. Pay attention to the gumline.

Floss daily

Flossing cleans the areas between teeth that your brush can't reach. Once a day is enough. If you notice bleeding when you floss, increase flossing to twice a day until bleeding subsides (bleeding is actually a sign of bacteria being present so you need to be proactive when you notice bleeding when flossing).

Watch what you eat and drink

Sugary and acidic foods and drinks are the main cause of tooth decay. Drinking water after meals helps rinse away food and acid. It is a good habit to wait 30-60 minutes after eating or drinking something acidic before brushing your teeth. This ensure you are not damaging your enamel which can soften with acid.

Replace your toothbrush regularly

Every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed. A good tip is to change your tooth brush every season.

Dental Fissure Sealants

Fluoride & Sealants — Extra Protection for Your Teeth

Fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. They're quick (just a few minutes at your appointment) and recommended for both children and adults who are at higher risk of cavities. After a fluoride treatment, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes to let it absorb.

Dental fissure sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the grooves of back teeth — the spots most prone to decay. They’re most commonly applied to children's permanent teeth, but adults with healthy teeth can benefit too. Sealants last 3–5 years and are a simple way to reduce the risk of cavities in hard-to-clean areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of a check-up varies depending on what's involved - the examination, X-rays, and clean are each itemised separately. If you're a preferred health fund member with Bupa, Medibank, or NIB, your check-up, clean, and X-rays may be covered at no gap up to your yearly limit. Call us on (03) 9571 6667 for a fee estimate, or bring your health fund card and we'll check your entitlements on the spot.

Bulk billing for adults is not available for general dental check-ups. However, eligible children may be bulk billed under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS).

Most appointments take around 30-45 minutes. If it's your first visit, or if X-rays or additional treatment are needed, allow a little extra time.

No special preparation is needed. Simply brush and floss as normal before you arrive. Bring your health fund card if you have one, and any previous dental records or X-rays if you're a new patient.

Your dentist will explain any findings clearly and discuss your options before any additional treatment is undertaken. You will never be pressured into proceeding with treatment on the same day — a treatment plan will be provided so you can make an informed decision in your own time.

Absolutely. We see patients at all stages, including those returning to dental care after a long gap. There's no judgement here - our priority is getting you back on track. The sooner you come in, the sooner we can identify anything that needs attention and help you maintain a healthy mouth going forward.

Yes. Many dental problems develop without causing any pain or obvious symptoms. By the time discomfort appears, the issue is often more advanced and more complex to treat. Regular check-ups catch problems early, when they're simple and inexpensive to address.

Yes, dental anxiety is very common and our team is experienced in looking after nervous patients. Please let us know when you book and we'll take extra care to explain each step, go at your pace, and ensure you're completely comfortable throughout. We also offer needle-free comfort options and sedation for patients who need additional support.

Common signs include gums that bleed when you brush or floss, redness or swelling, persistent bad breath, or teeth that feel sensitive at the gumline. In later stages, teeth may feel loose. However, gum disease often progresses without obvious symptoms, which is another reason regular check-ups matter. We assess gum health at every appointment.

Usually, you can avail our services in the suburbs like: Murrumbeena, Moorabbin, Chadstone, Ashburton, Caulfield, Malvern, Glen Iris, Malvern East, Bentleigh, Bentleigh East.
